Gimme shelter

What a weekend.

We went to visit my parents on Saturday, for Mother's Day. We spent the day with them, and even got some qt with my grandparents. But last night, Lord have mercy on all of us. I had just put my daughter down to bed, around 9:30, and my dad, hubby and I sat down to watch a movie.

Then the sirens went off.

We knew the weather was supposed to be bad, but not that bad. We grabbed our daughter and hot footed it to the courthouse (next door, where my mom works), and ducked into the records vault. Mom called the civil defense director, and he said they hadn't spotted a tornado, but sounded the alarm because it was likely there would be one. Things were OK at that point, but he said if they sounded again, there was a tornado sighting.

So back home we went, put daughter to bed and resumed our movie watching. Thirty minutes later, the sirens went off again. Thank goodness for the warm-up; we were ready this time. It was pouring down rain now, and all of us were soaked when we got there. Two or three other families also came, including one poor woman who was nine months pregnant and had been on bed rest.

This time, someone had a police scanner and we were able to listen to the deputies' chatter in various parts of the county. It struck me how ironic it all was. When I was my daughter's age, mom had me enrolled in kindergarten at Water Valley First Baptist Church. That spring, a tornado ripped through town, demolishing the church, and I had to finish kindergarten at the Methodist church. I was only 5 but I still remember the night it came through, and how the world looked the next day. So at midnight yesterday, there we all were in the vault in mom's office, wet, scared and completely at the mercy of Mother Nature. I prayed that she wouldn't have to see a scene like I did when I was her age.

We'd wrapped my daughter in a quilt on the run over, trying to keep her head dry. I wrapped her in it again and laid her down on the floor. She fell asleep while we were waiting for it all to pass.

And fortunately, it did pass. The tornado had gone over us but not touched down.

It was definitely a Mother's Day I'll never forget!

Interestingly enough, I was out at Enid Lake at a friend's cabin and we were pretty sure we saw the funnel cloud go overhead. The lightning was so intense, it was almost like daytime. We ended up being stuck out there until after 1 a.m. It's one of the worst storms I've seen in a good number of years.

Glad y'all made it through unscathed.

Nothing like family togetherness on Mother's Day! So glad you are all safe and I'm really glad your daughter slept through it all. My son is still scared from seeing the tornado go through Ridgeland a few weeks ago.

Glad she was able to sleep through it all, I know that made it easier.

My Goodness!

Thankfully you had this safe place, records vault, to go to.

Cow is quaking at this photo of Sandi's and is happy the tornado did not touch down.

Moo!

Glad you all survived. We had an
F1 hit about 20 miles south of here in the next county, and another F1 about forty miles to the east of here two counties over. And I slept through it all!

That's scary! You're lucky y'all came out all right!
Photog mama, we were about two hours north of Jackson. The C-L did a story about the bad weather, but didn't mention Yalobusha County. Thank goodness it didn't touch down!

I wondered where you all were that night as I watched channel 9 weather. I knew you were at mom's but had no clue where you all would go to hide. I remember that tornado you spoke about too. It's so unfair that deadly weather strikes and takes people down then the next day the sun is shining and birds are singing. It's just so bad.
