They grow up too fast…
One morning when my middle son was a senior, he needed a ride to school because his vehicle was in the shop. He had just a few days left before graduation and was running late, so I dropped him off at a sidewalk closest to his first class.
The entrance on the left led into the high school building and the one on the right led into the kindergarten building. I watched him walk toward the school and turn left. With no warning, tears flooded my eyes. I realized that I had dropped him out for kindergarten so many times at that same sidewalk. I could hear my mother telling me that they’d be grown before I knew it.
Realize that even though you are exhausted now, the years really will fly. You’ll be so busy taking note of special occasions that you miss all the great things that happen in between those milestones. Stop what you are doing and listen to what they are saying. It’ll only be a short time before they’re teenagers and won’t have time to talk to you.
My three children are grown and when they reminisce, it’s about the simple things. They love to talk about playing in the mud or lying in the back of a pickup to look for the Big Dipper.
Whatever you are doing right now is not as important as spending time with them. Sit in the middle of the floor and read them their favorite book or play a silly game. Those dirty dishes can wait.
